At first glance, it appeared that a cheeky owner had escaped two X-rated horse names beyond Racing Australia, but the governing body insists that we are simply mispronouncing them.
Punters were laughing after a scolding pair called Lovin ‘Deqoque and Get On Deqoque appeared in separate races at a rally at Daegon Racecourse north of Brisbane on Tuesday.
The horses, both trained by Darryl Ward and ridden by jockey Bobby El-Issa, finished fourth and second in their respective races, but it was their unusual nicknames that caught the attention of racing fans and even made headlines on abroad.
“Interesting how # 1 in Test 8 and # 5 in Test 9 went through the system when appointed,” Steve Ridge tweeted.
But Racing Australia says it is fully aware of the names and that everything is on the table.
“We communicate with owners when they submit names to make sure we know how the horse names are pronounced and what the name means,” Racing Australia boss Myles Forman told 7 News.
“And in this case it’s De-quo.
“Look, a combination of letters and words can mean different things to different people.
“In this case, we trust that De-quo should be pronounced.
“So there is nothing here that raises concern for Racing Australia.”
If you say so, sir.
