New Years Honors 2021 for Dave Dobbyn, Rob Fyfe and Dame Anne Salmond

Musician Dave Dobbyn, former Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe, public health expert Professor Michael Baker, and Covid-19 modeler Professor Shaun Hendy are among those named on the list of New Years honors.

Two individuals received the highest honor, the Order of New Zealand: Professor Emeritus Sir Mason Durie for his transformative approach to Maori health and Distinguished Professor Dame Anne Salmond for her work on cross-cultural exchanges and environmental issues.

Former Consumer New Zealand CEO Suzanne Chetwin, Black Fern Kendra Cocksedge and former cricketer Debbie Hockley have also received praise for their work.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern congratulated the list of winners and praised their work during what has been a difficult year.

Ardern said Durie and Salmond were named for their tremendous contributions to the country.

“Professors Anne Salmond and Mason Durie are rightly recognized for their tremendous contributions to New Zealand in many fields, including science and social sciences in Maori education and health.

“The country is richer for its contributions,” he said.

Sir Mason Durie became a member of the Order of New Zealand.

Dobbyn was joined by former MP and Speaker of the House of Representatives David Carter, former television host Ian Taylor and one of the founding directors of Te Panekiretanga or Te Reo Māori (Institute of Excellence in the Maori Language), Professor Pou Temara , to become Knights Companions.

“Dave Dobbyn is responsible for some of our most popular Kiwi anthems and has been a part of the music industry for five decades,” Ardern said of the Piece of sky singer.

The Prime Minister’s Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Juliet Gerrard, and Professor Cynthia Kiro, who led the development of a formal Maori tea policy at the University of Auckland, have been named Dame Companions.

Suzanne Snively was named an honorary Dame Companion for her work as president of the Transparency International chapter in New Zealand since 2011.

“Juliet Gerrard is rightly recognized for the role she has played in putting science front and center in our decision making, including during COVID-19. Cindy Kiro has made a great contribution to ensuring the well-being of the children of our country, and Suzanne Snively is a tireless worker in ensuring transparency in the public and private sector, “Ardern said.

Former Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe has recently served as a business advisor to the government’s Covid recovery plan.

Fyfe and Chetwin were named Fellows of the New Zealand Order of Merit: Fyfe for their services to business and tourism, and Chetwin for consumer rights. Former cricketer Hockley joined them, for her work in the sport.

Two of the most prominent names during the Covid-19 pandemic, Hendy and Baker, were also recognized for their efforts, becoming members of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

The 2021 New Years Honors winners included Professor of Public Health Michael Baker, Covid-19 Modeling Professor Shaun Hendy, and Black Fern Kendra Cocksedge.

Other notable inclusions to the New Zealand Order of Merit membership list include Cocksedge for his contributions to rugby, and Professor Bronwyn Hayward, director of the Sustainable Development and Civic Imagination Research group at the University of Canterbury.

Former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley’s husband, Burton Shipley, was awarded the title of Officer for his work in basketball administration, and Assistant Adjunct Professor James Tully was named for his accomplishments in journalism.

Thirteen leaders from the Pacific were included in the New Year’s honors, representing a set of sectors including health, education, community, arts, sports, media and the public sector.

“These Pacific beneficiaries have demonstrated leadership, dedication and tenacity with a heart for the Pacific, and each has made a genuine difference that has impacted the communities they have worked with,” said Pacific Peoples Minister Aupito William Sio.

Afamasaga Vaafusuaga Telesia McDonald Alipia’s involvement in Pacific early childhood education was celebrated with the title of Officer, while Reverend Elder Tumama Vili, a strong advocate for the Samoan and Pacific community on the South Island, was named member.

“This is just a glimpse of the important contributions made by all Pacific grantees and highlights the considerable role they have played in supporting our Pacific communities,” said Sio.

Ardern said the prominent theme on this year’s list is that while the honorees’ work has improved life in New Zealand, the work continues.

The New Zealand Royal Honors system is used to thank and congratulate people for their community service and to recognize achievement. There are 154 beneficiaries in 2021, including athletes, conservationists, scientists, medical professionals, judges, and educators.
