Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and guests, from Elton John to their son, Archie, appear today in the royal couple’s first audio release for Spotify, a 34-minute special with reflections on 2020.

The couple who resigned from their royal duties in spring invited friends and admirers to record audio diaries from the show.

“It’s been a year and we really want to honor the compassion and kindness that has helped so many people get through it,” says the Duke of Sussex when introducing the podcast.

“And, at the same time, honor those who have experienced unthinkable loss and uncertainty,” adds the Duchess of Sussex.

John, 73, was among many musical artists who were in the middle of a tour when the pandemic hit. “We suddenly stopped,” he says in his audio diary.

Other contributors include tennis player Naomi Osaka, who won the US Open in 2020 and calls it “the year I felt most grateful for the things and people around me.”

Stacey Abrams, whose push for voter registration helped put Georgia at the political center of the United States, sees 2020 as a year in which “there was an increase in horror and meanness, and justice struck back.”

Despite the coronavirus pandemic dominating the headlines, Meghan and Harry made headlines in late March when they left their royal duties and soon moved to California, settling in the coastal community of Montecito.

The podcast is the first in a multi-year agreement between his production company Archewell Audio and Spotify.

With some training from his parents, 1-year-old Archie ends the podcast with a “Happy New Year!”
