A second person died today after an accident between a milk tanker and a motorcycle in Southland.

Police confirmed that a man had died in the accident on the Riverton-Wallacetown Expressway at the Oreti River Bridge.

A woman seriously injured in the accident died this afternoon after she was airlifted by rescue helicopter to Dunedin Hospital.

The accident occurred at 1.30 p.m., near Taramoa Rd and Price Rd, a police spokeswoman said.

The man died at the scene and the woman was taken to Dunedin Hospital in critical condition.

He died in the hospital shortly after, police said.

Emergency services at the scene said the motorcycle and a Fonterra milk tanker appeared to have collided.

A Fonterra spokeswoman confirmed that a company truck was involved in the accident and said the driver was not injured.

“We are supporting our driver and assisting the police with their investigation in any way we can.”

Could not provide further comment.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time while the Serious Accident Unit attends the scene.

The road remains closed between Cumnock St and Taramoa Rd.

Motorists should expect delays, take an alternate route, or delay travel through the area.

A New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokesperson said two fire devices had been dispatched to the scene, from Wallacetown and Invercargill.

Firefighters were assisting on the scene, including with traffic control, and police were spearheading operations, the spokesman said.

There were at least four police cars present and it looked like the road would be blocked for some time.
