Guize Men’s & Women’s Clothing owner Brett Stokell said Boxing Day sales were better than last year.
Taranaki shoppers spent $ 1 million on St. Stephen’s Day sales, exactly the same amount as last year, new figures show.
Data released by PayMark shows that nationwide, Kiwis spent $ 62.2 million on December 26, excluding food, beverages and hospitality, 2.2% less than on the same date last year.
Bad weather in some parts of the country is believed to be partly due to the fall.
But spending increased 5 percent during the five weeks ending December 27, and spending on December 23 and Christmas Eve increased 10.4 percent.
Guize Men’s and Women’s Clothing owner Brett Stokell said they were nervous about what their Boxing Day would look like, as it was their first since the store had moved from Center City to New Plymouth’s Main Street earlier this year.

“Boxing Day is never that important to us,” Stokell said, compared to chain stores.
But its sales were up from last year, which was unexpected.
“We were very happy with that.
“We have been through the greatest December in our history.”
Trade told me that at 8am on Saturday there were 4400 unwanted gifts for sale on the website.
However, in Taranaki it seems that people are somewhat more grateful for what they have received.
There was only one unwanted gift on the list in the region: a body care set for him or her.
Like Monday night, only two people had made offers.
