In a lengthy seven-minute Instagram video, fitness expert and podcaster Hilaria (sometimes Hilary) Baldwin responded to claims online that alleged the 36-year-old had been “faking” a Spanish accent, using a false name. and sharing incorrect statements. he was born in Mallorca, Spain.
Baldwin’s post was in response to a now-viral Twitter thread that shared multiple videos of Baldwin speaking with a Spanish accent that conflicted with the American accent he uses in his recent Instagram videos.
“You have to admire Hilaria Baldwin’s commitment to her decade-long rift in which she poses as a Spanish person,” @lenibriscoe tweeted.
Among the thousands of responses, some of Baldwin’s former classmates claimed that the yoga instructor grew up in the United States and was called Hilary, not Hilaria.
“I went to high school with her. A truly lovely person, I remember, but a completely white girl from Cambridge,” wrote one user.
“I went to high school with her. She was perfectly nice and serious about ballroom dancing. Her name was actually Hilary Hayward-Thomas and she didn’t have her current accent,” shared another.
Many posts on Twitter have also expressed confusion, intrigue, and anger at the star’s changing identity.
“Hilaria Baldwin, aka Hilary Thomas, is the weirdest story I’ve heard this year. Faking a whole personality and accent all this time? Her parents are white and from Boston. There’s no way she’s been born in Spain since her mother (sic) was in medical school in Boston in 1984 (she graduated in 1986), “wrote one user.
“Remember when Hilaria Baldwin (née Hilary Hayward-Thomas) would say ‘how do you say, uh,’ cucumber ‘in English?” Shared American writer Sophie Ross.
“I’ll give this to Hilaria Baldwin: When you compromise with a scam, you COMMIT. You even gave your kids Spanish names. Hilaria from Mallorca is really Hilary from Boston. Can’t make up this shit version of blackface?”
Your confusion is justified. It was previously reported that Alec Baldwin’s mother of five and wife grew up in Mallorca, Spain and can be heard speaking with a Spanish accent in various media interviews.
Baldwin herself also claimed on the #mumtruths podcast that she moved to the United States when she was 19 years old to go to New York University.
“My family lives in Spain, they live in Mallorca”, he confirmed to the hosts.
His talent agency biography with Creative Artists Agency also confirms that Baldwin “was born in Mallorca, Spain and raised in Boston, Massachusetts.”
However, clearing up the confusion in his Instagram video, Baldwin has now confirmed that he was born in Boston, Massachusetts and not in Mallorca, Spain.
“I was born in Boston and grew up spending time with my family between Massachusetts and Spain. My parents and brothers live in Spain and I chose to live here in the United States,” he wrote in the caption. “We celebrate both cultures in our home – Alec and I are raising our bilingual children, just as I was raised.”
He also admitted that being bilingual his accent fluctuates.
“I am that person that if I’ve been speaking a lot of Spanish, then I tend to mix them up and if I’ve been speaking a lot of English then I mix my Spanish,” he said. “It’s one of those things that I’ve always been a little unsure about. When I get nervous or upset, I tend to mix the two.
“It’s not something I’m playing at … I want it to be very, very clear.”
Finally, in regards to her name, Baldwin said that although she used the name Hilary in high school, her family knows her as Hilaria. Later she “consolidated” her name as Hilaria, as it was administratively easier.
“One of the things that I love about how my parents called me, it means happy in both languages, we can all be very clear that it is the same name, it is just a few different letters, we shouldn’t be so upset about it,” she said.
Earlier this week, Baldwin also received criticism for an Instagram photo “after the bath” in which she can be seen holding her 3-month-old son in underwear.
Comedian Amy Schumer reposted the image in a now-deleted Instagram post, with a tongue-in-cheek caption that read: “Gene [Schumer’s baby boy] and wanted to wish everyone a happy holiday season. Enjoy it with family members who are talking to you this year. “
Expressing confusion over the post, Baldwin said that Schumer’s post resulted in many comments that embarrassed her body after birth.
“I love a good joke, don’t think this should have been that important,” he said in an Instagram video shared on December 23. “My only concern is that it started to spiral out of control … we are entering a place of bodily shame.
“The problem is that sometimes we put aside the forms of people … If you are doing body inclusivity, that means body inclusion for everyone.”
Baldwin later followed with his own joke.
“Expecting a lot of positivity in 2021, like Alec with our next child … thank you @amyschumer for being part of our pregnancy announcement and for convincing me that after five children, I have done enough,” she wrote, sharing a retouched image of Schumer , herself and Alec.
