Emergency services were called in for the fire near Moturua Island yesterday afternoon.
Lewis Hudson was in a nearby boat and said he could see thick black smoke billowing out.
“It was a very intense kind of fire, a real kind of hell. Initially we were about 30 or 40 meters away and on a reasonably windy day you could hear the fire.”

Northland Regional Port Captain Jim Lyle said the owners had contacted their insurer and would later recover the ship.
Meanwhile, the wreck has been marked with a buoy so that other water users can avoid it.
“It’s a very busy time of year here for boats at the moment, so the sooner we can get it out of the way the better,” he said.
Lyle said there was diesel in the boat, but most of it probably burned in the fire.
