A test spell from Australian Pat Cummins and a brilliant one-handed grip from captain Tim Paine kept the Boxing Day cricket test against India in the balance on day two in Melbourne.
India lost two wickets in the first session of the second day at MCG on Sunday, both to Cummins when they reached 90-3 at lunch in response to Australia’s first inning of 195.
The big moment occurred with India’s treadmill Cheteshwar Pujara poised for another substantial hit, facing its 70th installment at 17.
Cummins, the world’s best test bowler in the middle of a dangerous spell, found the edge of Pujara and Paine darted to his right to seize the opportunity just above the grass.

Paine took off to celebrate, chased by his teammates as India dropped to 64-3. Cummins took two wickets in the space of five innings after eliminating rookie Shubman Gill by 45, also trapped behind by the boss.
But India, 1-0 down in the four-leg heat after being eliminated by 36 in Adelaide, fought hard and substitute captain Ajinkya Rahane was undefeated in 10 in the interval, along with Hanuma Vihari (13 not out).
