Japanese anime film specialist Studio Ghibli this week released the trailer for its latest film, Earwig and the witchBut the switch to computer-generated 3D graphics (CGI) worries some fans.
Studio Ghibli is famous for its beautiful hand-drawn 2D characters that have earned the studio a huge fan base.
The move to CGI comes as no surprise, but while some fans are prepared to embrace the change and hope for the best, others are venting on social media.
Fans are missing the hand-drawn graphics and wondering if this really is a step in the right direction.

A fan writes on Twitter: “I think I’ll be the one to say it. I hate this style of animation. “While another says,” I’ve seen the trailer for Earwig and the witch and I have some mixed feelings. The animation is cool and super stylized, but I still prefer the hand-drawn 2D style of Ghibli animation. It just seems more attractive to me. “
There are others who are eager to see the film, which is showing for the first time in Japan on December 30.
Earwig and the witch tells the adventurous story of an “orphan”, Earwig, who is adopted by a selfish witch. The stubborn girl sets out to find her lost family and discovers that her mother has magical powers. It is based on the book by Dianna Wynne Jones.
