From a Mazda Demio in the wrong color to a pair of Apple Airpods Pro that were too fancy, more than 4,400 unwanted Christmas gifts have already been listed on TradeMe.
Quickly becoming its own kind of Kiwi tradition, thousands of gifts whose owners were less than satisfied are popping up online, and more likely in the next few days.
But it’s not just the re-gifts that the online auction house hope to tap into, it’s also the bargain hunters looking for the best Boxing Day deals.
In 2019, more than 50,000 searches for unwanted gifts were conducted within 24 hours of Christmas.
“Despite their best intentions, it’s clear that our loved ones don’t always succeed in giving gifts, leaving many of us with items we don’t want and don’t use,” says spokeswoman Millie Silvester.

According to a recent survey by Trade Me, nearly half of New Zealanders receive at least one missed gift at Christmas.
But Silvester says re-registrants shouldn’t feel guilty, with 55 percent of Kiwis saying they agree to have their gifts registered, while 26 percent are indifferent.
For those who were left with a gift that fell through yesterday’s festivities, Silvester’s main advice for re-listing is to make sure the gift stands out.
“A good backstory always goes well and be sure to avoid any item that is personalized or easily identifiable – you never know, the donor could be looking for a bargain on Trade Me too.”
