Police are looking for witnesses to an assault, possibly by a group of robbers, in south Auckland last night that left a man in critical condition.

The victim was attacked on Glenross Drive in Wattle Downs around 10:20 p.m., said Detective Inspector Chris Barry of Manukau Counties CIB.

He suffered critical injuries and was operated on at Middlemore Hospital.

More than one criminal is believed to have been involved, Barry said.

A neighbor, who lives near the crime scene, told 1 NEWS that they heard explosions, such as fireworks.

When they left the property, they saw a black vehicle fleeing the scene.

Other neighbors have told 1 NEWS that the street is quite quiet normally.

A resident returned home in an Uber around 11 p.m., and by that time the street was packed with officers.

Police have not released any other details about the incident, but are asking the public to help reconstruct what happened.
