A Taranaki motorist caught in the arrest captured police throwing spikes on the road and surrounding the car of a man believed to be involved in a firearms incident.
The driver who filmed the action was leaving Inglewood for New Plymouth when he was pulled over by police on State Highway 3 at the Waiongana Stream Bridge around 2.50 p.m. Tuesday.
At the front of the queue of traffic, the man, who did not want to be identified, had an unobstructed view and captured the moment when police threw spikes on the road as the suspected criminal crossed the bridge.
“They [police] they were on each side of the road, they asked me to stop and everything developed.

In seconds, the suspected criminal’s vehicle crossed the bridge and stopped inches from the peaks. Officers armed with Tasers quickly surrounded his vehicle.
The alleged offender got out of his vehicle, which had a trailer attached with what appeared to be a quad bike, and surrendered to police without issue.
About 10 minutes before the arrest, officers had seen a vehicle believed to be involved in a firearms incident in New Plymouth on Monday, a police spokesman said.
They followed the vehicle and the spikes were placed by another unit present, they said.
“The vehicle stopped and one person was detained.”
The 25-year-old man’s arrest was processed administratively and he was ordered to appear in New Plymouth District Court on January 6 facing charges that included presenting a firearm.
According to court documents, the man presented a compressed air rifle, that is, a replica of an M4 paintball gun, to another man.
He was also found in possession of an air rifle and two paintball guns while a protection order was in effect against him, and was caught driving while prohibited.
