Kiwifruit Dmitry Pelevin was in France in March when the world began to close down. Desperate to get back to his seven-year-old son Andre, he tried to get multiple flights home to Auckland, but airlines were cutting services every day.
It was then that he had his light bulb moment: sailing.
“I had a lot of time to think about it … And surfing around the world is something I always wanted to do,” he told 1 NEWS.
Traveling to the Caribbean, he picked up his ship and embarked on his journey.
“The cyclone season was starting, so I decided to cross the Pacific alone.”
At home, her son’s mother, Olga, couldn’t believe what she was about to do.
“We all thought he was crazy. We got a little text message from Dmitry all the others, telling us that he hadn’t seen the land in days, ”Olga said.
The sailor admits there were some scary moments, like when he was fishing for dinner one night.
“I was fishing for squid and I saw a big shadow pass under the boat. I started it up and got out of there pretty fast, ”he laughed.
Little Andre has grown increasingly excited as Christmas approached, his mother told 1 NEWS what she has been talking about this day for weeks.
“He kept saying when, when, when!”
And finally, after six months of crossing oceans, they reunited on a small dock at the Gulf Harbor Mariner.
“I missed him so much. I’m very happy, ”Andre said.
The couple has a lot to update. Andre is eager for Dad to take him fishing on his boat.
