A Karori resident said she could see flames two streets away.

Emergency services have been called to a fire at the former site of Wellington Teacher’s College in Karori.

Fire and Emergencies Shift Chief Jill Webley said crews were fighting the blaze, which started around 3.15pm and was “well involved” upon arrival.

There are no reports of injuries or anyone being in the Donald Street building.

Webley said crews are in the process of extinguishing the fire.

Smoke can be seen throughout the suburb and a resident two blocks away told him Stuff I could see flames.

A police spokeswoman said they were also alerted to the fire and were at the scene.

The former Wellington Teachers’ Training College campus has previously been a point of contention, as the retiree village operator Ryman Healthcare bought the Victoria University campus in late 2017, after a long struggle from the Ministry. of Education and Wellington City Council to keep it in public hands.
