Traffic is stopped between Waikanae Beach and Ōtaki, north of Wellington.
Traffic remains heavy in the Wellington region and delays are not expected to ease until after 6:00 pm
An earlier accident on State Highway 1 south of Ōtaki, which has been cleared, caused significant delays in both the north and south and prompted police to ask drivers to avoid the area, unless urgent.
At 5.25pm, NZTA said traffic remained heavy throughout the region and advised motorists to delay their trips.
Areas experiencing significant delays include State Highway 1, Pukerua Bay, where queues return to Plimmerton roundabout, Peka Peka, with queues back to Waikanae Beach interchange, Te Horo to ataki, where there are queues north from Te Horo and south from Forest Lakes Rd.
The queue for the Hutt Rd off ramp on SH1 is now clear and the queues on SH2, Ngauranga to Petone are now clear as well.
Paekākāriki Hill Rd is closed until 7pm
No one was injured in the previous accident south of Ōtaki.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said motorists should use its vacation travel hotspot tool to work when and where delays are expected across the state road network.
