A man died in Dunedin hospital eight days after colliding with the side of a boathouse.

A Dunedin man who collided with the side of a shed in his wheelchair died at Dunedin Hospital.

Michael MacLeod, 46, died Sunday, eight days after sustaining fatal injuries in a crash.

The accident occurred around 10 p.m. on December 12 in Macandrew Bay on the Otago Peninsula.

Police said MacLeod lost control of his wheelchair while crossing a runway and hit the side of a boathouse.

He suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital.

A friend said Stuff that MacLeod was the father of two.

He loved animals and was “bright, cheerful and kind.”

A family member wrote a tribute online: “We are all heartbroken, you have left this land too soon.”

A police spokeswoman said the circumstances surrounding MacLeod’s death were still under investigation and that the incident would be referred to the coroner.

A funeral would be held for MacLeod on Thursday.
