Award-winning photo by German photographer Tobias Baumgaertner.
The image of two widowed penguins comforting each other as they gaze at the Melbourne city lights has been awarded a superior photography award.
German photographer Tobias Baumgaertner captured the moment in 2019 after spending three nights in the Australian penguin colony.
“These two fairy penguins perched on a rock overlooking the Melbourne skyline were there for hours, fin at fin, staring at the bright lights of the horizon and the ocean,” he wrote on Instagram.
“A volunteer approached me and told me that the white woman was an old woman who had lost her partner and apparently so had the young man on the left. Since then, they have met regularly to console each other and stay together for hours watching the dancing lights of the nearby city. “
