Nelson Marlborough Health CEO Dr. Peter Bramley will be the permanent replacement at the CDHB.

Peter Bramley has been named executive director of the troubled Canterbury District Board of Health.

The head of Nelson Marlborough Health has been serving in the role since August, when David Meates suddenly resigned.

It is understood that of the short list, two candidates were local and two were based abroad.

The CDHB is under pressure to recoup a growing deficit that reached approximately $ 180 million and is grappling with a leadership collapse. Seven of the 11 members of the executive team resigned in a matter of weeks, prompting protests from staff and calls for government intervention.

Meates publicly blamed the government for the deficit days before his departure.

Bramley started at Nelson Marlborough in 2010 as director of medical and surgical services. In August 2016, he became interim CEO and was appointed permanent CEO in 2017.

He said he was looking forward to moving to Canterbury where he will also be responsible for the West Coast DHB.

“Both (DHB) have a lot of talent and they both have complex but different challenges. With fantastic teams to work with on both sides of the Alps, I know we can achieve great things.

“After a period of transition, I look forward to bringing some stability and leadership to the teams.”

Board chair Sir John Hansen said Bramley had handled a “wide range of challenging scenarios and has a proven track record of achieving large-scale transformation.”

“Importantly, Peter is aware of our financial situation and knows there are many challenges and opportunities ahead,” Hansen said.

Bramley will begin the role on February 15.
