Abuse by hospital staff has prompted the Hawke’s Bay District Board of Health to increase its security presence and install more CCTV cameras.

DHB Executive Director Keriana Brooking said the district’s board of health had zero tolerance for violence and verbal threats and would invade visitors who were abusive to staff.

He said that staff working for the DHB, or in any other health care setting in Hawke’s Bay, should not have to face abuse, intimidation or violence of any kind at work.

“During the holiday period, we have staff who work 24/7, caring for people when they need medical and life-saving treatment. The staff dedicate time to their families so they can be there when you need them. It’s a scary time for people who end up in the hospital, but our staff deserve to be treated with respect at all times. “

Brooking said abusive patients will be asked to sign a contract with the DHB and register to behave while being cared for; otherwise, they will be discharged as soon as they are medically fit to leave.

“It is not right that staff who come to work to care for people have to deal with violence and intimidation from anyone.”

“Please take care of yourself during the holiday period. We are here if you need us, but treat our staff with the kindness they will show you.”
