A man who stole a charity box and later killed a security guard has appeared in court again, less than two years after being convicted of murder.

Sydney Jayden Kokiri will be out of custody in time for Christmas, despite the crime spree he committed after the death of Goran Milosavljevic, the father of two.

Kokiri was 17 years old and high on methamphetamine when robbing in Papakura Countdown prior to the fatal incident in May 2018.

In March of last year, he was sentenced to two years in prison for the murder of the Allied Security worker.

Kokiri was then allowed to request house arrest.

But in July of this year, Stuff reported that he admitted 15 new charges, including theft, using a document to gain a pecuniary advantage, and trespassing on a motor vehicle.

Kokiri was in Manukau District Court on Monday.

He told Judge Philip Recordon that he had completed a week-long relapse prevention program.

“You have done well in the courses,” said the judge.

He was sentenced to nine months of house arrest and must refrain from consuming alcohol and drugs.

Kokiri will only be allowed to leave home with the permission of a probation officer and was also sentenced to 15 months of judicial control.

Courts have described judicial supervision as a sentencing option targeting cases where decisions to impose a community-based option or jail time are finely balanced.

The court will assess Kokiri’s progress in the new year with a report due on January 31 and a hearing on April 22.

Killed by charity box

Milosavljevic, a Serbian citizen, was only months away from becoming a New Zealand citizen when he died.

Kokiri stole a charity donation box and a box of raisins from the supermarket and tried to flee.

Milosavljevic stopped the teenager, who threw a punch at him but missed.

The guard hit Kokiri in the face, grabbed him by the neck and held him against a store window, telling him to leave.

A crowd, including Kokiri’s mother, gathered before the couple parted ways.

Then Kokiri launched another punch, hitting Milosavljevic on the side of his head.

Milosavljevic fell and hit his head on the concrete floor.

Milosavljevic’s eldest son described being woken up when Allied Security contacted him and he went straight to the hospital.

In a statement after his father’s death, the son said: “We expected miracles, but they didn’t happen.”
