Five new cases of coronavirus were announced on Monday (File photo).

There are five new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand and none in the community, the Health Ministry said.

The Ministry said that one of the cases was considered historical, a fisherman from Russia.

They were tested on arrival on December 18 after traveling from Russia to Singapore.

The Ministry said they boarded a fishing boat in Lyttelton, near Christchurch, on the same day.

The ship left New Zealand shortly after the arrival of the crew and is now in international waters.

He will not return to New Zealand for a few months.

The person had a previous infection, consistent with coronavirus, reported in Russia and the result of his last test was interpreted as a reflection of that previous infection.

The person was not considered contagious and the ministry said it was still determining whether the case should be reported against the New Zealand count (as it has been today) or if it should be reported as a case in Russia.

On Sunday, six managed isolated cases were announced.

On Thursday, the Government announced that free Covid-19 vaccines will be available to the entire New Zealand population from mid-2021.
