Karori murder: victim had to appear in court on robbery charges

A man who died on Karori property over the weekend was due to appear in court Monday morning on theft charges.

Stuff it is his understanding that the victim, 33-year-old Rau Tongia, was to appear in Wellington District Court on Monday facing two counts of robbery.

A registrar dropped the charges after he was told that Tongia had died.

Police launched a homicide investigation after a family member found Tongia’s body at the address of Percy Dyett Dr around 8:20 a.m. Sunday.

A police investigation into the death was underway Monday morning.

Neighbors spoken to in the normally quiet suburb Monday said they heard a rumble from the cluster of houses where Tongia’s body was found early Sunday morning.

Police confirmed that deputies separately attended the same Percy Dyett Dr property around 1.25 a.m. Sunday, following a report of a disorder incident.

It is understood that a party was being organized in the group of houses on Saturday night, which lasted until the early hours of the morning.

On Monday, the police were also standing guard at the front of the section.

Police said investigations into the disorder incident were part of the ongoing homicide investigation.

Detective Sergeant Steve Wescott said police were pursuing strong lines of investigation and working to hold those responsible to account.

The Karori community could expect to see a significant police presence in the area in the coming days, as police seek to provide reassurance for local residents and speak to potential witnesses, Wescott said.

On Monday, neighbors they spoke with said they heard screams coming from the group of three houses until late Saturday night.

“I just remember that it was very late, I was asleep and I woke up, there was just a lot of noise. I was not entirely consistent with that, ”said a neighbor.

“It was just a lot of noise, a lot of screaming. Just a bit of noise early in the morning. We woke up and thought … ‘I hope they shut up now’, and then we went back to sleep. Then we woke up to the news. Quite strange. It’s very out of place here.

“I just feel sorry for them.”

The neighbor said that the tenants of the group of houses had been living in the property for about a year.

But other neighbors did not appear to know the tenants of the three properties, which have been cordoned off by police. All three houses share a driveway, with another house located in front of the driveway.

The group of three houses are all newly built.

At the scene, on Monday morning, police officers stood guard both at street level and above the shared driveway, with a tent erected near the trail for the police and staff of the Institute of Science and Research. Environmental (ESR).

Percy Dyett Dr is a long, winding, and quiet road in the western suburb, which overlooks two reservations.
