Nine people, including young people, have been arrested after an assault in Tauranga that left a man seriously injured.
A police spokesman said they were called to Willow Street around 6:50 p.m. yesterday after a report of a disorder in which a group of people approached a man at a bus stop after a verbal exchange.
The man was allegedly assaulted by the group and received serious injuries before being taken to hospital. Since then he has been discharged.
Police said the man and the group did not know each other.
A 20-year-old man is due to appear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow on charges of injuring with intent to cause serious bodily harm, while the remaining eight “will undergo a youth trial,” a police spokesman said.
“The arrests should reassure the community that these types of incidents will not be tolerated.
“Everyone in our community deserves to live their lives safely and feel safe.
“Police hope that these swift arrests demonstrate our commitment to holding those responsible to account.
“We would also like to thank members of the public who witnessed the incident and acted quickly to call emergency services and provide assistance to the victim.”
Police said they are still working to locate another person believed to be involved.
