Nine people have been arrested following an attack in Tauranga that left a man seriously injured.

Police were called to Willow Street around 6:50 p.m. yesterday following a report of a disorder incident in which a group of people approached a man at a bus stop and after a verbal exchange.

The man was allegedly assaulted by the group and police said the man and the group did not know each other.

The man suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. Since then he has been discharged.

A 20-year-old man is due to appear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow charged with injuring with intent to cause serious bodily injury.

The rest will undergo a youth process.

Police said they were still working to locate another person believed to be involved.

“The arrests should reassure the community that these types of incidents will not be tolerated.

Everyone in our community deserves to live their lives safely and feel safe, “said a police statement.

“Police hope that these swift arrests demonstrate our commitment to holding those responsible to account.

We would also like to thank members of the public who witnessed the incident and acted quickly to call emergency services and provide assistance to the victim. “
