Auckland’s waterfront venues have been enjoying the success of the New Zealand team’s America’s Cup with packed bars and restaurants for three consecutive days.

The final day of the World Series regatta saw crowds flock to the Viaduct basking in the glorious December sunshine as Team NZ beat American Magic and Luna Rossa in two exciting races to clinch the overall title.

The regatta did not get underway until well after 4 p.m., with a delay of more than an hour first due to light winds and then again when spectator boats flew within the race limit after a change of direction from the wind.

But on the mainland, the Viaduct was packed with gamblers filling bars, restaurants and fan zones.

Half a dozen places the Herald spoke to reported full houses, but with great vibes everywhere.

A manager at O’Hagan’s Irish pub said the fact that it was the last weekend before Christmas also added to the excitement.

“It has been very busy, a lot of families today and a lot of people watching the races.

“It’s the last weekend before Christmas so everyone is out and there are a lot of Christmas parties too, but even with just the races I’d be busy no matter what.

“However, the crowds have been good, very good vibes.”

A St. Alice manager also reported a “full house,” along with several other waterfront hot spots.

The energy will continue until Sunday with another afternoon full of races and good weather forecast.

Sunday will see the teams battle for the Christmas Cup in a knockout regatta, with World Series seeds forming the semi-final pairings.

The first race is scheduled to start at 3:12 p.m.
