Summary of day two
The New Zealand team was a perfect two-for-two over Ineos Team UK, while American Magic and Luna Rossa battled in two exciting races on the second day of the America’s Cup World Series regatta in Auckland.
The regatta received a necessary injection of excitement after an opening day in which three of the four races were completely one-sided.
The New Zealand team looked vulnerable after the first day with a loss to the American Magic, and while it was far from perfect on the second day, it was simply too good for the Ineos Team UK.
The British, on the other hand, proved themselves to be worthy challengers following ongoing troubles from day one.
The British faced hydraulic failure in their first two races of the regatta and had a good chance of not even competing on the second day. But they managed to overcome their difficulties and put together a working boat that showed enough pace to lead the Kiwis through two stages in race two on Friday.
It was in that race, which followed a one minute, 32 second victory in the first battle, that the Kiwis looked particularly shaky, ruining their start to park in the starting box, giving the British a comfortable lead from the line.
But the New Zealand team prevailed in the milder winds, an area in which Ineos knows they need to improve, and began to reduce their opponent’s lead, finally winning by one minute and 42 seconds.
The other two challengers on American Magic and Luna Rossa met in two dog races, each with a victory. More importantly for the Italians, they were a huge improvement from day one to day two.
But the early career hurt them, receiving three penalties for technological reasons.
The Americans nearly capsized in the first encounter shortly after rounding the first mark, before bringing their ship under control. That gave Luna Rossa the lead, who sailed to the first mark, building a useful lead that played its part in a 12-second victory.
He proved American Magic not as strong as Opening Day suggested with a self-inflicted error, a bad tack, that cost them dearly.
The second fight was on a shorter course due to conditions, but with eight stages instead of six, which required a show of endurance from both teams.
The start was as dramatic as they come with three penalties shared between the two unions.
The race was close with a lead of just five seconds by one point, before the Americans finally pulled away for a 30-second victory.
Heading into day three, American Magic are on top with three wins out of four, tied with the New Zealand team but ahead in the head-to-head tiebreaker. Luna Rossa is in third place with a win, while Ineos Team UK is last without a win.
