America’s Cup 2021: Boats set for a new look as light winds forecast for day three of World Series races

Light winds in Auckland this morning cast doubt on whether sailing would take place on the third day of racing of the America’s Cup World Series.

While the Metservice is predicting 10-knot peak gusts for Waitemata Harbor and Hauraki Gulf this afternoon, with the possibility of even milder wind spells, America’s Cup organizers are currently moving forward with racing.

Regattas cannot take place if the wind speed does not exceed 6.5 knots and if conditions remain slightly above that mark, sailing enthusiasts can enjoy a new look at boats on the water.

In light winds the AC65 boats are expected to set sail with “Code Zero” headsails, an adaptation specifically designed for these types of days.

“It could potentially be the first time we’ve seen the large Code Zero headsails fly off the bowsprit to generate enough power in light winds,” AUT sailing professor Mark Orams told NZME Saturday morning.

Earlier this morning it was speculated that light conditions would force organizers to shift racing to the less fan-friendly A field, however the same course as the first two days of racing, C, will be used again today.

Some prime spots to view Course C are Bastion Point and Okahu Bay Wharf.
