The castle dream ended after 10 years of work; reluctant owners list it ‘as is, where is it’

Ten years ago, the owners of this property set out to build the project of their dreams: a grand castle on a huge lot in North Canterbury.

But, having put their heart and soul into the project for over a decade, the couple are reluctantly listing their half-finished castle for sale, “as is, where is it.”

Ray White Morris & Co real estate agent Barbara Redway says homeowners are selling “for reasons beyond their control.”

Today the castle features a mix of rough blocks and red plastered walls.

She says that the property, in Ashley, Waimakariri, was to be her pièce de résistance: a huge luxury family home with a tower, seven bedrooms, five bathrooms, 12 bathrooms, several living areas, home theater, gym, elevator and pool.

Photos show the basic frame is installed, along with most of the windows, but there is still a lot of work to do.

Potential castle buyers are unable to enter without the listing agent present, due to health and safety concerns.

Redway says the decision to sell was not made lightly: “They were very passionate about his vision.”

Due to the condition of the building and health and safety concerns, potential buyers must be accompanied by the listing agent when visiting the property.

Not that he stopped the visitors. Redway says 70 people attended the first open house last weekend.

“Some people were just there to take a look, but others were serious.”

Redway says it’s nearly impossible to put a value on property.

“In terms of price, we have no idea.

“There are not many half-finished castles on 20 acres (8.3ha) coming to market. We honestly don’t know. “

An auction date has been set for January 28, 2021.

The castle was designed to house more than six bedrooms and various living areas.

“We deliberately went too far, so people had a lot of time to do their due diligence,” says Redway.

The building does not have a Certificate of Code Compliance, but the agency can provide all council documents.

“Everything is very transparent,” says Redway.

Floor plans, property files, and an auction package are available upon request.

The owners cannot complete the project.
