The long wait is finally over.
All four lanes of Christchurch’s newest expressway, the $ 290 million North Corridor, will open to traffic at 1 p.m. Thursday.
The shared path for cyclists and walkers will open at the same time.
New Zealand Transport Agency Regional Relations Director Jim Harland said it was great to see it open in time for Christmas.

He encouraged drivers to be careful in the early days as riders got used to the route.
“People will want to enjoy the new sights, so please give the driver plenty of room.”
The permanent speed limit will be 100 km / h between the Waimakariri River and QEII Drive.
You will go down to 80km / h on QEII Drive. The speed limit through the Cranford Basin section will drop from 80 to 50.
The northern corridor connects downtown Christchurch with State Highway 1 and the Waimakariri district, and bypasses Belfast, Northwood and Redwood to help ease congestion on Main North Rd.
