A newspaper cover has mocked US President Donald Trump as a “fat man” who “doesn’t sing” after the Electoral College formally voted to secure Joe Biden’s election victory.
“The United States voted. The Supreme Court ruled. Now, the Electoral College affirms Biden’s victory over conspiratorial presidents,” the New York Daily News said Tuesday. “It’s over, even if the fat man doesn’t sing.”
Another American newspaper took a more moderate tone.
“Voters affirm Biden’s victory; voting is quiet,” said the New York Times headline, below the main story about the Covid-19 vaccine launch stating that “cure is coming.”
USA Today also led with the vaccine as “hope, finally,” but noted as its number two story, “Biden passes 270 vote threshold, Trump allies still working to alter the election outcome.”
The Washington Post gave Biden the best billing. “Electoral College Makes Biden’s Victory Official,” read its main headline.
“In rebuttal to Trump’s attempts to reverse the results, Biden speaks about the power of democracy,” read one story.
“The vote proceeds without surprises or interruptions, despite the efforts of the president and his supporters,” said the other.
On Monday, the Electoral College formally voted in each state to confirm former Vice President Biden’s 306-232 victory over Trump.
All that remains is a joint session of Congress on January 6 where votes will be formally counted, followed by inauguration day on January 20.
Top Republicans, including Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, have publicly accepted the result and cracked down on ongoing efforts to reverse the election, which the president continues to claim were fraudulent.
