Police are investigating a serious incident in which a man was assaulted and later abandoned on Auckland’s Bethells Beach this week.

The man was seriously injured and is recovering at Auckland Hospital.

Waitematā Police Detective Sergeant Major Megan Goldie said the place where the man was assaulted is unknown.

After being assaulted, he was dropped off in the West Auckland suburb between midnight and 4.30am yesterday.

He then sought help from residents of a home on Te Aute Ridge Rd and police were called, he said.

“Police are carrying out a canvas of the area and requesting CCTV footage from residents to identify the vehicle and the person who left the victim.

“We have not been able to speak to the victim at this time, but we will try to do so when she feels like it,” Goldie said.

“We want to assure our community that at this initial stage of our investigation we do not believe this is a random incident.”
