Derek Prue Sr, from Alberta, decided to get the tattoo after noticing that his eight-year-old son, Derek Prue Jr, always wore a T-shirt when he went to the pool.
“I knew he was aware of it,” Prue Sr told CBC NEWS through tears.
“I saw how he was reacting, and it made me want to do it so that he wasn’t the only one.”
Prue Sr surprised his son by getting the tattoo without his knowledge and then revealed it to him while he and his sister were swimming in a hotel pool earlier this month.
“I was happy and I was a little confused. I didn’t know I was going to do that,” said the young man.
The tattoo artist who did the work says that Prue Sr suffered for the sake of her son.
“He’s gone through the wringer for that,” said Tony Gibbert, owner of the Juicy Quill tattoo studio. “It is quite painful.”
It was all worth it though, as eight-year-old Prue said of future swimming: “As long as Dad is there, I can take my shirt off.”
