John le Carré, author of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, has died at 89 years of pneumonia.
In a statement from his literary agency, The Curtis Brown Group, CEO Jonny Geller said: “It is with great sadness that I must share the news that David Cornwell, known to the world as John le Carré, passed away after a brief illness ( no Covid-19) in Cornwall on Saturday night, December 12, 2020.

Author John le Carre died at the age of 89.
“He was 89 years old. Our hearts go out to his four children, their families, and his loving wife, Jane.
For six decades, John le Carré dominated the bestseller lists and review pages with his monumental work.

His dramatic launch onto the world stage began with the publication of his third novel in 1963, The spy who came from the coldand the public disclosure of his secret life working with the British intelligence services.
By dedicating his life to writing, he went on to define the Cold War era with the help of his character, George Smiley, and through his complex plots and beautiful prose, he cast a harsh light on the injustices of our world. “
Actor Alec Guinness played George Smiley in the 1979 BBC television series Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Le Carré’s latest novel, Agent running in the field, was published in October 2019.
What he likes will never be seen again, and all book lovers, all interested in the human condition, will feel his loss.
“We have lost a great figure in English literature, a man of great wit, goodness, humor and intelligence. I’ve lost a friend, a mentor, and an inspiration, “Geller said.
A short statement from the family paid tribute to the hospital staff in Cornwall who had cared for le Carré.
“It is with great sadness that we must confirm that David Cornwell – John le Carré – passed away from pneumonia last Saturday night after a short battle with the disease.
“David is survived by his loving wife of nearly fifty years, Jane, and his sons Nicholas, Timothy, Stephen and Simon. We all deeply regret his passing.
“Our thanks to the wonderful NHS team at Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro for the care and compassion they showed you during your stay. We know that they share our sadness ”, he concluded.
