The cause of a fire that damaged a one-story home in Christchurch has yet to be determined.

New Zealand Fire & Emergency (Fenz) spokesperson Mau Barbara said they received multiple calls about the fire on Cranford St, St Albans, around 4.45pm on Sunday.

He said the one-story house was “well wrapped” in the fire when two teams arrived from the Christchurch headquarters.

Just after 5:30 p.m., Barbara said that about eight firefighters equipped with personal breathing apparatus were fighting the fire from inside the home and were specifically targeting the ceiling void.

He went out to his backyard and could see smoke coming from the roof of the neighboring house on Cranford St.

Fire crews had cordoned off the property Sunday afternoon.

Fire crews had cordoned off the property Sunday afternoon.

He then saw the couple, who he believed had been living at the property for the past three years, run off with their dog and minutes later firefighters arrived.

“I just hoped they were okay. They were a bit shocked, ”he said.

Radahika said that she too was shocked by the experience, but was grateful for fenz’s quick response.

“I am still in shock. Just seeing that … is horrible. However, the fire crews were quite fast, thank God for them. “

Radahika said she had offered the couple to stay at her home until they found another home, but instead they stayed with a family member.

He intended to give them some food in the next few days and help them find a new home.

Barbara said residents were believed to be inside the home at the time the fire broke out, but no injuries had been reported.

The fire was contained and the firefighters had left the scene at 7 pm.

Other properties are not believed to have been threatened or damaged by the fire.

At this stage it was unclear how the fire started or if it was deemed suspicious, Barbara said.
