A couple were shocked after a nearly 100-foot tall tree crashed into their car while driving down a street on Mt Eden in Auckland this morning.

Spencer Macintyre, 30, described hearing a loud crunch while driving down Grange Rd and could see that the tree was about to fall on them.

“I hit my brakes and quickly backed up. The trunk hit the hood of the car, but if it had been a second earlier, it would have gone through our roof.”

“We are quite touched by that.”

Jo Hal, a Mt Eden resident who was walking in the morning when she saw the fallen tree, said it was only a matter of time before an incident like this occurred.

“He could have killed someone, it’s really scary … he’s so lucky no one died,” Hal said.

He said that many of the trees in the area were overgrown and dangerous for traffic, and Auckland City Council had done nothing about it.

“One of my neighbors had tried to prune one of the trees and was fined $ 300 for it.”

Emergency services were called to the scene at 8.55 am today.

A police spokeswoman said Fire & Emergency had contacted Auckland City Council about the incident and were working to eliminate it.

The Herald has contacted the Auckland Council for comment and was waiting for a response.
