Emergency services responded to the accident on Saturday.

Six people were taken to hospital after a two-car accident in Tekapo on Saturday.

St John’s police, fire and emergency (FENZ) and ambulance crews were dispatched to the accident, on Tekapo-Twizel Rd between Hayman Rd and Tekapo Canal Rd around 12:20 pm on Saturday.

FENZ spokesperson Mau Barbara said the driver of one of the vehicles had to be removed by the FENZ crew, while two helicopters were also dispatched to the scene.

Part of the road was closed for several hours, but a police communications spokesman confirmed that it had reopened around 4 p.m.

According to St John, the patients were sent to the Timaru and Christchurch hospitals. Two of the patients are said to be severely injured, while four are moderately injured. It is understood that one of the vehicles included a family of five.

A police communications spokesman said the cause of the accident was unknown at this time.
