Staff at a bar in central Auckland were forced to intervene after a punter was seen with a gun last night.

Authorities were called to a location on Sale St after reports that someone was in possession of a firearm shortly before midnight.

A police spokeswoman said: “The staff took the weapon from the person and the police arrested them for illegal possession.”

No shots were fired and no one was injured.

When asked if the person involved had threatened someone in the vicinity, the spokeswoman said: “There is no indication that they were threatening, only that others realized that they had it in their possession.”

The incident comes nearly a week after a shooting at another central Auckland pub, the Dr. Rudi’s Rooftop Brewing Co, on the Viaduct.

Police were called there around 2:45 a.m. last Sunday, after they shot at the ceiling of the lobby.

Police said a “brief altercation” broke out between a group of people outside the bar before someone drew a gun. They had previously retired from Dr. Rudi.

No one was injured in the incident, but other gamblers there took cover, some reportedly hiding under tables, after the shots were fired.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested and will face various firearms-related charges as a result.
