Lydia Ko remains on the hunt for a top 10 at the US Women’s Open in Houston, but a late triple bogey has abruptly halted New Zealand amateur golfer Amelia Garvey’s first major championship.
Ko is tied for 14th at 1-under, six shots behind fugitive leader Hinako Shibuno, after a late blot saw her score 1-under in the second round.
“I feel like it was a case where it could have been better but it could have been worse,” Ko said. “So yeah, another solid round.

Ko got off to an encouraging start with two early birdies, but she suffered a setback when she bogeyed the 16th hole. That brought her down from seventh to fourteenth.
“I missed a very short birdie, but because the wind was picking up in the last nine, it obviously makes it much more difficult to hit it very close.

“But the direction and strength of the wind is definitely making a big difference. I had a hole where I had a pitching wedge onto the green and it was definitely a lot shorter compared to the other days. “
Garvey finished just one shot below the cutoff line after throwing a 5-for-more to sit in a tie for 67th with 4-for-4.
The 20-year-old from Canterbury looked right at home on the big stage but lost her way at the end of a windswept second round.
Garvey suffered a setback when he bogeyed the 15th hole, having birdied the 14th, but it was the next triple bogey on the 16th, followed by another bogey on the 17th.
“I just don’t think I had it today at all, and I knew it all along,” Garvey said. “Through nine holes he was doing very well to be 1 over.
“So it was just a routine. When you’re not doing it right, you’ll get caught, and I finally did.
“I had the same mentality as yesterday, just go out there and do the same, only today I just wasn’t there.”
