Fire and Emergency NZ is asking the public to stay away from the area.

Emergency services are responding to a fire in Christchurch’s Port Hills.

Fire and Emergency NZ says there are multiple fire trucks present and more appliances are responding.

“We ask the public to stay clear of the area while firefighters work to contain the fire,” FENZ said in a Facebook post.

Christchurch woman Liz Ridder said her husband heard explosions, “like fireworks,” and looked out the window to see a fire on a hill near a water tank on Friday night.

“The fire was already quite large when he saw it, and now it is moving both up and down the hill,” he said.
