After refusing to give an armed robber money, a Hastings store owner escorted him with a baseball bat.
Paksha Mukesh Patel was sitting behind the counter Thursday morning when a man twice her size walked into the Kiwi Street Foodmarket and pointed a gun at her.
“He came in after 11 in the morning and opened a school bag, put it on the counter and said ‘give me money.’ So I said ‘what for?’ “

Patel started looking for his cell phone under the counter, but couldn’t find it.
Then he went around the counter. He opened the bag and grabbed something so I took the stick and walked over to him, then he ran away. “
Patel said she was “a little scared” during the test, but wanted to protect what was hers. She called her son and husband who were outside the store when the man entered.
Emergency services were called shortly after.
Paksha and her husband Mukesh and their son Rohan have run the Camberley store for the past 17 years.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to us before,” Patel said.
But the robbery did little for the phase of Patel, who was back at work Friday morning.
“Your mother is a tough little sister,” commented a local as he entered the store. Others also praised Patel’s bravery as they made their morning shopping.
A police spokesman said they were investigating the incident and there were no injuries or arrests.
