Erika Becerra was eight months pregnant when she told her mother that she was having trouble breathing, among a series of most feared symptoms these days.

The 33-year-old woman from Los Angeles, USA, was diagnosed with Covid-19 and taken to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where she and her husband moved for work reasons.

Doctors noticed her condition worsening and her labor was induced, according to a report from KCAL in Los Angeles. Becerra gave birth to a healthy boy, Diego Antonio Becerra, on November 15.

“She had a normal labor, gave birth to her son but couldn’t hold him because right after giving birth … she started to decline,” Becerra’s brother, Michael Avilez, told KACL in a video.

Becerra succumbed to the virus and never had a chance to hold her baby.

Amid a spike in county-wide cases, Michigan surpassed 10,000 coronavirus deaths this week and ranks ninth nationally for total Covid-19 confirmed deaths since January. In the past seven days, the state ranks fourth in deaths.

Becerra’s diagnosis came after she spent a weekend in the hospital when she had contractions in November. The following week, she began to experience shortness of breath and was hospitalized again.

Although there are no known underlying conditions except pregnancy, Becerra’s condition worsened. Her family ran from Los Angeles to comfort their daughter. She remained connected to the ventilator during her last moments.

“Towards the last moments, I was crying. I know she listened to us as we prayed for her, we talked to her, we comforted her in the last moments, ”Avilez said in a video with tears in her eyes.

“Everything my sister wanted was the best for everyone and she cared about life. She didn’t deserve to go through what happened. “

Becerra is survived by her 1-year-old daughter, newborn Diego, and her husband. All three tested negative for coronavirus.

“I know God needed her more than we did,” Avilez said. “And with open arms we gave it to God last night.”
