TVNZ has been forced to apologize after a joke in which her Breakfast The team wished a happy wedding anniversary to two of the UK’s worst serial killers.

The error occurred this morning during a segment called Today’s the Day in which viewers submit photos of family members to mark birthdays and anniversaries.

A viewer had asked for Francis and Violet Eastwood’s 30th wedding anniversary to be recognized, and as host Jenny-May Clarkson was reading a message, a photo of Fred and Rosemary West appeared.

The Wests committed at least 12 murders of young women between 1967 and 1987. They buried their victims on their property in Gloucester.

TVNZ corporate communications general manager Rachel Howard said they “sincerely apologize” for the error and “that additional checks will be conducted in the future.”

“A picture of Rosemary and Fred West was sent to Breakfast team along with a fake backstory for our Today’s The Day segment. Unfortunately, this was not caught prior to airing.

“We sincerely apologize to our viewers who saw this error on screen.

“Jenny May spoke to our viewers as soon as she realized the mistake and noted that we take responsibility for doing things right and now we are adding additional steps to make sure we are not being taken advantage of in this way again.”

Howard said TVNZ was disappointed that someone chose to mislead them when the segment provided an opportunity for viewers to share their positive news.
