A female driver was lucky enough to escape without major damage after her car flipped around a curve while traveling in a suburban neighborhood in Whanganui.
In terrifying footage obtained by the Herald, the driver was seen speeding around the corner on Harper St before losing control, hitting the sidewalk and causing the car to roll onto its side.
While on its side, the car slid forward and crashed into a tree before coming to a stop on the road.
Resident Joe, who watched the incident unfold, told the Herald that the woman was lucky not to be seriously injured, especially given the greasy conditions.
He described the road as “like a race track.”
“When you arrive, you can’t really see what’s coming. It’s just one race track. There are so many [people] They come hooning around the corner.
“Not a single brake light was used during this accident. It was such a big collision that I thought it had been thrown from the vehicle.”
Joe said he ran out to try to help the woman, but she soon left the scene.
“I ran out, jumped over the fence and tried to give him my high visibility because he looked like he was in shock.
“I was surprised she wasn’t hurt anymore. Both airbags went off.”
Police confirmed that the driver had left the scene of the accident and were hoping to locate her.
“The driver had left the scene when the emergency services arrived and investigations are underway to locate them.
“We encourage anyone with information that can assist us in our inquiries about the accident to contact us on 105, quoting the event number P044709087.”
Joe, who has lived on the street for two decades, says the highway is notorious for crashes and wants people to slow down.
He told the Herald that the thought of another accident often leaves residents awake at night.
“It’s like a race track. You can hear the engines running high and the tires screeching.
“Lying in bed at night, you always get tense wondering if you’re going to hear an explosion because you do. We hear it several times a year.”
