TVNZ apologized after its Breakfast show was tricked into wishing a happy wedding anniversary to a pair of notorious serial killers.
A photograph of British killers Fred and Rosemary West aired this morning on the show’s Today’s the Day segment, in which viewers submit photos of family members to mark birthdays and anniversaries.
When a photograph of the murderous couple appeared on the screen, co-host Jenny-May Clarkson said: “Today is the day that Francis and Violet Eastwood celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. I love it! This is their children’s favorite photo. . taken on their honeymoon in 1990 “.
Indira Stewart then added: “But get that afro.”
The Wests are among the most infamous serial killers of all time.
Fred and Rosemary West abducted, tortured and dismembered at least nine young women between 1973 and 1981, burying the bodies in their own home.
Fred West also killed before meeting his wife and Rosemary murdered his stepdaughter, Charmaine, in 1971.
The photo was allegedly sent to Breakfast by “the loving children of the couple,” Dan, Rachel and Edwin, who “say that you are the most loving parents they can ask for.”
TVNZ corporate communications general manager Rachel Howard told the Herald that they “sincerely apologize” for the error and said additional checks would be carried out in the future.
“An image of Rosemary and Fred West was sent to the breakfast crew along with a bogus story for our Today’s the Day segment. Unfortunately, this was not caught before it aired,” Howard said.
“We sincerely apologize to our viewers who saw this error on screen. Jenny-May spoke to our viewers as soon as she realized the error and noted that we take responsibility for getting it right and now we are adding additional steps to ensure we that ‘not to take advantage of them in this way again.
“We are disappointed that someone decided to mislead us when this daily segment is an opportunity for our audience to share their positive news.”
