An infant was taken to the hospital in critical condition after a “water incident” at the Napier Aquatic Center in Hawke’s Bay.

Emergency services were called to the pool facilities at 11:56 am on Saturday. A first responder and an ambulance were present.

A spokesperson for St. John’s confirmed that the patient was involved in a “water incident” and was taken to the emergency department at Hawke’s Bay Hospital. A police spokesman confirmed that the patient was a baby.

Police said the complex has been closed pending investigations.

“Members of the public can expect to see a police presence at the pool this afternoon while investigations are carried out,” the spokesman confirmed.
