The niece of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, says that her uncle is “criminal, cruel and traitor” and must be in prison after he leaves the White House.
Mary Trump, a psychologist, author and outspoken critic of her estranged relative, rejects the idea that taking a former president to trial would deepen the nation’s political divisions.
“It’s downright insulting to be told over and over again that the American people can handle it and that we just have to move on,” Mary Trump told The Associated Press in an interview this week.
“If anyone deserves to be prosecuted and tried, it is Donald,” he added. “[Otherwise] we just leave ourselves open to someone who, believe it or not, is even worse than him. “
When asked about his comments, a spokesman for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign emailed a one-sentence response: “Did you mention you have a book to sell?”
Mary Trump, the daughter of the president’s older brother, Fred Jr, announced this week that she is writing a continuation of this summer’s scathing bestseller about her uncle, “Too Much and It’s Never Enough, How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.” . .
His new book, “The Reckoning,” from St Martin’s Press, won’t be out until next July. She will trace what she says is America’s collective trauma from its founding behind the backs of enslaved Africans to the growing economic and mental health impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.
The United States is “looking down the barrel of an explosion of psychological disorders” from the “trauma of living in a country where the pandemic not only hit, but was completely mishandled,” Mary Trump told the AP.
With a doctorate in clinical psychology, he argues that the United States needs to reimagine how it deals with mental health and mental illness, treating them with the same vigor as physical illness.
Mary Trump’s critical writing comes amid legal fights with her family.
Her uncle, Robert Trump, sued to stop “Too Much and Never Enough” from reaching store shelves, citing a family agreement not to publish stories about key family members without his approval, but a court rejected it.
In September, Mary Trump sued the president, Robert Trump, and her sister Maryanne Trump Barry, a retired federal judge, alleging they scammed her millions of dollars while taking her out of the family business. Robert Trump died in August and the lawsuit is pending.
When his book on the family was published in July, Trump tweeted that Mary Trump was “a rarely seen niece who knows little about me, says false things about my wonderful parents (who couldn’t stand her!) And me,” and raped a nondisclosure agreement.
The announcement of Mary Trump’s second book came as her uncle continued to falsely insist that she won reelection, but the vote was rigged in favor of Democratic rival Joe Biden.
The president has spent most of the past month complaining about the results, sending a group of attorneys led by former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani to mount futile legal challenges.
Mary Trump said the president’s post-election behavior “makes perfect sense,” given his personality, psychology and lifelong disdain for losers.
“This is someone who has never legitimately won in his life,” he said. “But he has never lost either. Because in his opinion, winning is so important and he always deserves to win that it is okay to lie, cheat and steal.”
Mary Trump said the president inherited his scathing behavior from his father, Fred Trump, a real estate developer who died in 1999. She called her grandfather “a horrible human being who simply revels in the humiliation of other people.”
“It’s not just that Donald is horrible, incompetent and cruel, it’s that he has been allowed to be,” she said. “Every transgression that has gone unpunished has been an opportunity for him to go further. That is why, in part, we will see him trashing as many things on his way out the door as he can.”
Mary Trump acknowledges that she has seen the president only sporadically for the past 20 years (she wrote in “Too Much and Never Enough” that he invited her to a family dinner at the White House in 2017), but, she argues, “she has not “t changed at all.”
“I’m basically looking at the same person that I knew when I was little,” she said.
Donald Trump faces at least one criminal investigation pending, an investigation into his businesses by the Manhattan district attorney that has been held back by a legal fight over access to his tax returns.
No former president has been arrested after leaving office, but Mary Trump argues that protecting powerful people from punishment has historically damaged the country. She used the postwar acquittal of Confederate General Robert E. Lee as an example.
“I think it would be a tragedy if Donald and everyone who allowed him and committed crimes with him is held accountable,” Mary Trump said. “It would make it impossible for this country to recover in the long term.”
