Kiwifruit Mike Loomey found blocks of Whittaker chocolate for sale for AU $ 2.95 in a supermarket in Brisbane, Queensland.
Whittaker’s chocolate is a Kiwi icon, but you can occasionally buy it cheaper in Australia.
It left a sour taste for Northland man Mike Loomey, who found discounted A $ 2.95 ($ 3.08) blocks at a Woolworths supermarket in Brisbane, Queensland.
True, it was a short-term grocery store deal, but Loomey said she’s never seen prices so low at home.
“Dammit!” said Loomey from Glenbervie. “I’ve never seen Whittaker so cheap in [New Zealand] and I never imagined that they would be so cheap overseas with all the shipping costs. It’s outrageous how kiwis are scammed in our own country by products made here. “

“I am a huge fan, I always support the fact of Kiwi, but I am very angry that I am charged more for it in my own country than my Australian colleagues”
A Whittaker spokesperson said that the recommended retail price for their products in Australia is “slightly higher” than in New Zealand, so we generally get the best deal.
“The same 250g block from Whittaker has a RRP of A $ 6 in Australia and NZ $ 5.29 in New Zealand. However, prices can vary significantly even within a country based on whatever discounts or promotions individual retailers decide to do, ”the spokesperson said.
Woolworths’ regular retail price for the blocks is A $ 7.95 (US $ 8.30). The Creamy Milk Chocolate block sells for $ 4.69 on the New World online store and $ 5.30 on Countdown.
A Countdown spokesperson said the company works to make food as affordable as possible for customers and runs regular promotions on chocolate products.
“We know that Kiwis love Whittaker’s Chocolate so we often have promotions on our 250g blocks. These would be priced between $ 4.30 and $ 4.70 and the non-special sale price is $ 5.30, “the spokesman said.
Loomey, who is in Australia visiting her family, took advantage of the discounted price by purchasing four blocks for her family. “It is never so cheap in [New Zealand]. So fucking cheap in Australia! “
Whittaker’s expanded its distribution to Australian stores at the beginning of the year. Its products are available at 800 Coles stores nationwide, as well as Woolworths, Big W, and some independent retailers.
“But we are a proud kiwi company and New Zealand is still our number one market,” the spokesperson said.
