New Zealand NBA basketball player Steven Adams says he hopes to form a special relationship with fans in New Orleans and has no hard feelings about being traded out of Oklahoma.
Adams has spoken for the first time since he was traded last month.
He had spent the first seven years of his career in Oklahoma City, a place where he built a special bond with fans.
After signing a two-year, $ 50 million extension to his contract, Adams is eager to side with Pelicans fans like he did at OKC.
“As a player, obviously, you only play basketball, but you also have to think beyond that, that you are representing a city and its history, and that is why the fans really want to meet you just to be sure of you” you are a good guy ” .
“You’re representing (the fans), it means a lot to people, so it shouldn’t be taken lightly, so I’m doing my best.”
“It’s not just that, I know I’m representing New Zealand too, a lot of foreign players in the NBA feel that way.”
Much was made of his trade with the “Big Easy” when he was talked about as a potential single-team player.
Adams, 27, admits he made great friends in Oklahoma … but says professional sports means nothing is forever.
“It’s all part of the business that is negotiated and that’s not really the difficult part, the difficult part is the relationships that you build and then you have to move on.”
“Dude, it’s not like I died or anything, I’m going to see you guys again, so it’s not that sad.”
“So it was a good time in OKC, but in terms of coming here, it’s an exciting team.”
There’s been a lot of talk about his pending combination in New Orleans with forward Zion Williamson, last year’s first draft pick, and Brandon Ingram.
Adams didn’t want to single out any player, but was excited about the Pelicans team and the coaching staff in general.
“It’s one of those teams where you have great talent in every aspect, a new coach, but not like a completely new rebuild, but it’s like you can see where this could go, exciting things, even being here one day. and the culture here is a solid man, he is good.
The Pelicans have made the play-offs only once in the past five years.
The new NBA season begins in three weeks.
