Police at the scene of a fatal car accident on SH2 near Snee Road, Takapau.

The three people who died when their car collided with a truck in Hawke’s Bay were on their way to work.

Firefighters who arrived at the crash site on Tuesday encountered a “horrible scene.”

Takapau’s team of volunteers were the first to reach the scene of the accident, which occurred on State Highway 2 between Norsewood and Takapau just before 2.50 p.m.

Three people died in the accident. They were on their way to work at the Silver Fern Farms meat processing plant in Takapau.

Takapau Fire Chief Lincoln Taylor said it was the second fatal accident in the area in three months.

“It was horrible. You can imagine the total impact of a small car versus the front of a Kenworth. There wasn’t much left of the car, ”he said.

“It is a terrible stretch of road. Unfortunately, our crew and the Waipukurau crew see many accidents in the [Takapau] plains. Yesterday was the worst in a long time, ”Taylor said.

Three occupants of a northbound car were killed when they collided head-on with a southbound truck.

Two died instantly. Firefighters treated an injured person from the car, who later died on the way to hospital.

The accident occurred in the southbound lane, Taylor said.

The truck driver was airlifted to the Hawke’s Bay Hospital emergency department with serious injuries. He was in stable condition Wednesday morning.

Taylor, who has been part of the firefighting team for 15 years, said he was not sure what caused the accident, even though it was raining and the road was wet at the time.

“The amount of fighting we have between that corner and the golf course in Waipukurau is quite amazing,” he said.

“Obviously, our condolences go out to the families,” he said.

Heather Kitson was at home about 250 meters from the scene of the accident when she heard a loud bang.

“I knew something bad had happened. It was very strong, ”he said.

He saw many people tending to the injured and directing traffic, and he saw the truck pull off the side of the southbound lane.

“It seemed to me as if the truck driver had been taking evasive measures,” he said.

Anyone who has seen the accident and has not spoken to the police should call 105 and quote the event number P044610166.
