A man was using his cell phone when he missed a stop sign and collided with another car in south Canterbury, causing it to fly through the air and seriously injure the driver.

Patariki Paora Isaacs, 34, was convicted of dangerous driving and injured in the August 4 accident near Geraldine. Police tests found cannabis and methamphetamine in his system.

His victim was unconscious and trapped for about an hour before emergency services could release her.

She was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital with multiple injuries, including a head injury that meant she needed assistance to complete daily activities.

Prosecution Sgt. Ian Collin said he had been unable to see his children for the past two months due to their injuries.

Collin told the court that Isaacs was driving his Nissan Murano in a northwest direction on Tiplady Rd at 4.15 p.m. on the day of the accident.

Isaacs told police that he was talking on his cell phone at the time of the accident and did not see the stop sign.

He admitted to using cannabis in Picton, but declined to comment on the methamphetamine.

He was sentenced in Queenstown District Court on Monday and held on remand for sentencing on March 1.
